Country House

RBW were commissioned by the owners to modernise their elegant country house. Previously a wedding venue, the style, layout and services were not suitable for a private residence. The ground floor was reconfigured to accommodate modern living, involving extensive structural work.

The living room of this country house was transformed into a luxurious modern kitchen. Originally located at the back of the building it was relocated to face the large patio garden at the front of the house. This involved major structural work to raise the height of the original stone chimney breast and fireplace to accommodate a new Aga. RBW contracted a stone mason to rebuild the impressive fireplace. We then knocked through the central window to create a double doorway onto the south-facing patio and refitted the solid oak panelling.

The original kitchen was repurposed to become a cosy snug with saloon doors leading to the new’ secret’ bar. The clients had the inspired idea to turn the old larder into a bar which could also be accessed through a ‘cupboard’ door in the hallway. RBW did all the decorating and structural work to accommodate a bar hatch.

The boot room involved a lot of structural work, it was originally two smaller rooms which were opened to create a large space including a utility area. we installed two large load-bearing steel beams across the ceiling to allow for the large double-sided cupboards to be fitted in place of the existing walls. The wall of cupboards can be accessed from the rooms on either side, an inspirational storage solution. We laid large Limestone flagstones throughout and relocated the toilet to the opposite side of the room, into the original coat cupboard, involving complex plumbing work to make this possible.

RBW undertook all the painting using Farrow & Ball paint. We also undertook all the plumbing and fitted the LED strip lighting and wall lighting.

We worked with Chapter for Interior Design.

"It is always a difficult balance choosing a builder/main contractor. Cost is always such a large factor, but this must be balanced with quality of work and, in our opinion, amiability of the builders on site. RBW struck that balance perfectly. From the early days 2 years ago starting with the gym/office, before moving on to the utility & boot room, new kitchen, snug and bar, we have gotten to know the team incredibly well - often spending more time with them than colleagues, friends, even family! They were such a pleasure to have on site- had they not been, we certainly wouldn’t have continued to use their services once the office was completed. Always courteous, incredibly friendly, and most importantly, incredibly skilled with a minute attention to detail. Nothing has ever been too much trouble for RBW, even our late night texts, weekend phone calls out of the blue- as such, we have always had wonderful peace of mind as the project progressed."
